The International Basketball Federation's (FIBA) ambition to make basketball the most popular sports community in the world saw them embrace the 3x3 concept several years ago, which the organisation feels provides an excellent opportunity to attract new players and fans to the game.
This formalized version of three-on-three basketball has strong urban roots and now boasts over 250 million players worldwide, making it one of the most played recreational sports on the planet. FIBA 3x3 has taken China in particular by storm, and such is the game's popularity in Southeast Asia, that 33 tournaments were held almost every week in the region in 2012.
There are thousands of 3x3 basketball tournaments for players to participate in and for fans to enjoy every year around the globe. These range from grassroots and neighbourhood events, to major tournaments such as the FIBA 3x3 World Tour and the FIBA 3x3 World Championships.
