Why watch Basketball Champions League Live Streaming?

Although it's considered just a third-tier basketball league in Europe behind the Euroleague and EuroCup, the Basketball Champions League gives the less illustrious clubs across the continent a chance to play teams outside of their domestic leagues. Players from these clubs will also get additional exposure that could lead to greener pastures in the future.

The BCL also vowed to give equal treatment to all participating clubs and by doing so promotes a more balanced competition.

Basketball Champions League History

The Basketball Champions League was conceptualized by FIBA Europe in 2015 to rival the Euroleague.

Organizers tried to lure the top clubs in the continent to leave the Euroleague and participate in the inaugural season of the BCL.

However, the teams declined and the new league was left with lower-ranked teams from domestic leagues across the continent. FIBA Europe used to run the Euroleague until 2000 when Euroleague Basketball was formed and took charge of the top-tier basketball league along with the second-tier EuroCup.

The maiden BCL season began in September 2016 with the qualifying stages. A total of 52 teams across 31 countries took part in the league's first season.

Basketball Champions League Format

The inaugural Basketball Champions League was supposed to have a 16-team, double-round robin format but when the top clubs opted to remain in the Euroleague, organizers decided to change the format.

The BCL instead kicked off with two qualifying rounds with the qualifiers making it to the 40-team regular season. The clubs were then divided into five groups of eight teams. Each team played its groupmates twice using the home-and-away format.

The group winners along with the three best-ranked second placers advanced directly to the Round-of-16 while the other second placers joined the third placers, fourth placers and top four fifth-ranked teams in the two-leg playoffs qualifiers. The remaining fifth-placed teams along with the sixth-placed teams, and the two best seventh-placed teams were relegated to the FIBA Europe Cup.

The Basketball Champions League is currently in its playoff stage.

The winners in the two-leg Round-of-16 will advance to the quarterfinals which will also be a two-leg affair. The winners will then advance to the Final Four. The semifinal games and final will use a knockout format.
