Portland Trail Blazers at Miami Heat Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers visit the Miami Heat at the AmericanAirlines Arena on Sunday.

Both teams have won their last two games and are in a tight race for the final playoff berths in their respective conferences.

The Blazers (31-37) are 1 1/2 games behind eighth-ranked Denver in the Western Conference. They wrap up a five-game trip after posting wins in San Antonio (110-106) and Atlanta (113-97).

Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum are again expected to deliver just like they did in their demoliton of the Hawks on Saturday. Lillard finished with 27 points while McCollum added 22 as the Blazers never looked back after dominating the first period 40-18.

"Usually for us, if we have fast starts we allow teams to get back into the game," Lillard said. "But tonight, I thought we were able to sustain our focus on both ends of the floor."

Backing up Portland's prolific backcourt duo are Jusuf Nurkic, Allen Crabbe and Maurice Harkless. Head coach Terry Stotts could also get quality minutes from Noah Vonleh, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds in their last game.

The Heat, meanwhile, began a five-game homestand with victories over New Orleans (120-112) and Minnesota (123-105). They are tied with the Milwaukee Bucks in seventh spot in the Eastern Conference with 34-35 records but the Heat have an edge in their head-to-head meetings.

"Probably anybody could have followed our team when we went on all those championship runs, but this is a totally different group," said Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra, whose wards were 11-30 in early January before winning 23 of their last 28 games. "The enthusiasm, the passion to follow this team probably matches that -- and I think that's pretty cool."

The bad news for Heat fans is third-leading scorer Dion Waiters has been ruled out of this game after spraining his ankle against the Wolves. Still, Spoelstra can count on reserves Tyler Johnson, James Johnson and Wayne Ellington to help Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside in the scoring chores. Dragic had 19 points and 10 assists in their last game while Whiteside had 23 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

The Blazers defeated the Heat 99-92 at home in their first meeting last December 3. The Oregon side, however, has not won in South Beach since 2011.
